HOW THE CAGED BIRD SINGS

“Nominated best blues song 2025” VIC/TAS MBAS Awards

“Vocals, Hammond and Guitar beautifully in sync”

Ian Ross - Blues with a feeling - 3CR

“How The Caged Bird Sings is a soulful blues journey of resilience and rebirth, where Kaliopi’s voice and guitar transform Maya Angelou’s inspiration into powerful, liberating emotion.” DULAXI Music Entertainment LA USA

"Her voice is tender and piercingly emotional, each word ringing with emotion and meaning. As the track progresses, her narration takes different tones of sombre reflection and remembrance for the life & lessons learned.

Musically, it’s a sublime piece of blues music. The steady arrangements hold the tempo and rhythm so well, while the organ and Kaliopi’s lead guitar is downright spellbinding". Good Music Radar Netherlands.

“It’s a song that shakes the dust off your spirit and reminds you that even in confinement, a voice can still rise” Apricot Magazine NY USA

“What emerges is a laid-back indie rock track that will draw you into a pleasant groove within seconds. I was equally captivated by the precise guitar riffs, which impress with their elegant drive and unmistakable vintage distortion sound".  NEWINDIERADAR Germany.

“One Woman One Love”

I grew up around love — but also around silence. Where devotion existed, but honesty was complicated. You don’t question that as a child — you absorb it. Years later, through the Blues and through sobriety, I started asking a different question: What would love look like if it were clean? If no one had to hide? One Woman One Love isn’t a rule or a slogan. It’s a longing. For devotion without wreckage. For love that tells the truth This is One Woman One Love.”

*KALIOPI & THE BLUES MESSENGERS [OUT NOVEMBER 14] NEW SINGLE — “How The Caged Bird Sings”
Written by
Kaliopi Stavropoulos**

Inspired by Dr. Maya Angelou’s powerful novel and poem “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” this original song by Kaliopi & The Blues Messengers echoes the message of resilience and freedom from oppression with endurance into one of liberation and rebirth.

Led by Kaliopi’s passionate and captivating vocals, the song opens with a sparse guitar that gently weaves through John Drew’s warm bed of Hammond, Paul Leeder’s deep bass lines, and Greg Rowan’s graceful pulse — each instrument breathing space into the story. The rhythm section holds a hypnotic, understated groove while the Hammond hums like a heartbeat beneath Kaliopi’s soul-drenched delivery.

After the final vocal refrain, Kaliopi’s guitar solo becomes the voice of the caged bird — painting its struggle and awakening. Across three soaring phrases, you can almost hear the flutter of wings gaining strength before the final, liberating flight. As the band fades, Wayne Albury’s clarinet takes the melody skyward, a haunting echo of reflection and freedom that lingers long after the sound fades.

Recorded at Woodstock Studios, Melbourne by Richard Stolz, and mixed/mastered by Sean O’Sullivan at Highway No.9, the track captures the timeless spirit of human courage — the will to rise, sing, and soar through pain.

“When Maya showed me how the caged bird sings — I started to live again.”

KALIOPI

BLUES WOMAN

Full BIO (New 2026)

Kaliopi

Kaliopi is an Australian blues guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter whose work bridges lineage and lived experience with fearless emotional honesty. Grounded in the tradition of early blueswomen yet unmistakably modern in voice, her music moves between tenderness and fire — part confession, part sermon, part celebration.

A graduate of Berklee College of Music’s Advanced Blues Guitar Program, Kaliopi brings technical command to storytelling that is deeply human. Her performances are immersive and intentional — shaped by a lifelong engagement with resilience, devotion, survival, and truth.

Following her award-winning album The Devil’s Voodoo Curse, Kaliopi entered a defining new chapter with the internationally acclaimed single How The Caged Bird Sings, nominated for Best Blues Song (VIC/TAS MBAS 2025). The song, inspired by Maya Angelou’s I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, marked a creative turning point — transforming endurance into liberation through blues prayer and cinematic arrangement.

Her 2026 single One Woman One Love further expanded that voice — an upbeat groove-driven meditation on devotion as both longing and risk — launching to a sold-out Melbourne premiere and global radio support across Australia, Europe, the UK, and the USA.

Recorded at Woodstock Studios, her forthcoming album A Day at Woodstock signals an artist fully integrated — musically confident, emotionally clear, and unafraid to hold beauty and complexity in the same breath.

Whether performing with The Blues Messengers in Australia or collaborating internationally, Kaliopi’s work insists that the blues is not simply sorrow — it is survival, ethical inquiry, joy, and reclamation.

This is music for those who listen closely.

Medium BIO (Press / Media Kit)

A graduate of Berklee College of Music’s Advanced Blues Guitar Program, where she earned a 4.0 GPA under Professor Michael Williams, Kaliopi has built a reputation as an artist of rare depth and command. Her voice moves effortlessly between tenderness and raw intensity, while her guitar work balances restraint, fire, and lyrical precision.

Described by Steven Jones, President of the USA’s Crossroads Blues Club, as delivering “sizzling guitar with howling vocals”, she brings raw authenticity and fire to every stage.

Kaliopi’s career bridges continents as well as cultures. After collaborating extensively in Greece with leading blues artists and bands, she will represent Greece at the 2026 European Blues Challenge in Katowice, Poland with her international project Lava Blues, while continuing to build her Australian legacy with The Blues Messengers.
